VSphere Update Manager with 5.5
I have esxi 5.5 2068190 on 2 hosts and have been thinking they have been getting updated regularly (by a co-worker). I was looking to see if we had applied 5.5 U3a and noticed it was missing, dug a little deeper and found the following:
Both hosts report 100% compliance, the baseline includes any. any so basically from 4.0 until 5.5 but the patch repository has nothing past 5.1 If I change the base line to just include esx 5.5.0 then is shows 0 patches, there is not option to include embedded esx 5.5.0?
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction to a solution?
Thanks for all the advice so far. I have internet connectivity and it can download new patches as it just downloaded 4 new ones for 5.1 today. It appears that the problem is related to esxEmbedded 5.5 not being in the list of products in the baseline criteria. I am currently looking into how this happens.
Ok so I found something, the version of Update Manager is still 5.1, so I am upgrading to 5.5 as I suspect that is the problem.
Probably should have checked the version first :/ Turns out you need Update Manager 5.5 to get updates for anything past 5.1

VMware Patching via Update Manager - ELI5
I feel really embarrassed, I have been using VMware since the early ESX days, but I have never really invested the time into learning the Update Manager and updating ESX hosts for patching nor have I attended any formal Vmware bootcamps or Certification Training, mostly self taught from daily use. We are running ESX 5.5u3 on Three hosts but never applied patching via Update Manager, but have installed using the Update 3 Media.
I have read the update manager guide at https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/vsphere-update-manager-651-install-administration-guide.pdf
I understand that I would need to create a "baseline" which appears to correlate to a minimum level of updates, version, etc. that I as an Administrator selects? Whats partially confusing is I see very old updates from 2009, but dont appear to apply to my hosts such as ESX 4.0 NIC Drivers, or Core/CIM Componenets or Cisco Nexus Drivers. Is this tool smart enough to not apply those updates, or am I the Administrator suppose to know to not include in this in a baseline? I am also concerned about what types of updates cause impact, such as VMTools, or updated Virtual Machine Version, don't want to accidentally apply that and cause an outage. We are also waiting to get approval from new licensing so we can update to a newer ESX version.
Are their better guides out their, or really great videos that other people have used in the past to learn this art to setup from scratch and get updated, but also asks/answers really important questions like the above?
