, I'm a frequent lurker and infrequent poster. I'm that stereotypical Asian dude that started rapping in 2009 after hearing D-Pryde and DFD except I'm still doing it in 2014. It'd be great if you guys could give me some feedback on this. :)
Damn this got more attention then I expected. Thanks for the support y'all. I guess I wasn't very informative in the original post, but I'm 18 (and apparently sound it lmao) and go by Deviant Zen as my rap moniker. I don't produce my own shit, but I usually edit, touch up, or rearrange instrumentals kinda like what Ye did with I don't like. Most of the beats on this tape were made by my friends and the others I found on the interwebz. I like to think I developed a good ear for instrumentals so I'm glad you guys like my sound.
It appears that my voice is kind of polarizing too haha but nothing I can do about that. To be honest I was thinking about quitting the rap shit since I'm starting college and might not have as much time anymore but you guys convinced me to keep at it. It's a real confidence boost to receive validation from internet hiphop buddies lol. This is a great community, one of the best on reddit tbh, and I will def try to be more active here while working on my singing hook game and vocal mixing while repping my asian rap homies. :D
What up everyone, back for another music thread. Little bit of a light week but still got a couple good releases. NEW RELEASES: Big K.R.I.T. - "Confetti"
-First single in over a year from KRIT out of Mississippi. Been waiting forever for some music out of Krit, I feel like he's been overlooked and held down my major label politics. Anyway, any fans of southern rap will definitely enjoy this song, that beat change halfway through is so nice. If you want to check out more from him, listen to songs like "Free Agent", "Cadallactica", and I also love his verse on "Play The Game" Run The Jewels - "Mean Demeanor"
-Killer Mike's flow is so goddamn good and he shows it once again on this one. The bridge on this track is kinda weird with the repeating/skipping thing, but not enough to trash the song. Highly recommend seeing them live, incredibly high energy. More of a rock show than a hip hop show. Skrillex - "HUMBLE" remix
-Dropped earlier this week, be prepared for every club DJ to drop this in their set for the rest of 2017 at least. I'm not one of those EDM trashers and Skrillex is actually an incredibly talented producer. I wouldn't listen to this one walking down the street, but a good song for your gym playlist. Rich the Kid feat. Kendrick Lamar - "New Freezer"
-This is the perfect song for anyone who is fans of both ATL mumble rap and "real hip hop". This is an interesting one for me. I'm an absolute Kendrick stan but this style just doesn't really fit him, to me at least (I understand my opinion doesn't mean shit to Kendrick). Kamasi Washington new EP, Harmony of Difference
-One time for my jazz heads! For real if any of you have the slightest interest in jazz music, this is the shit to listen to. He's an awesome composer and you can feel how hip-hop and blues could get inspired from this. Kamasi Washington is CRAZY on the saxophone and I think a lot of people can appreciate this. Highlights on here are "Knowledge" and "Perspective". Album from J. Roddy Walston & The Business, Destroyers of the Soft Life
-Probably my favorite release of the week, fucking love these guys. Great blend of southern rock/folk/classic rock, and I honestly think they appeal to an incredibly wide audience. This album picks up right where Essential Tremors
left off. We got the signature crooning vocals from J Roddy, backed by the almost messy sounding guitar, and I love when they sprinkle in the piano and certain tracks. Highlights right now for me are "Ways", "You Know Me Better", and "Numbers". Live album from Pearl Jam, Let's Play Two
-So this album was recorded during their two nights last summer playing at Wrigley Field, there's also a documentary to go along with these shows that's in theatres now. Seems like an incredible show to have been at, I wonder if Big Cat went to see his good friend Eddie at one of the performances? "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter" still bangs on this one. First album from Lute, *West 1996 Pt. 2
-Just discovered Lute recently and he's an incredibly refreshing rapper among all the yachty/uzi/lil pumps out there. This dude can flat out rap. He's signed to J. Cole's label Dreamville and actually has a similar style to Cole, without making you want to fall asleep. Lots of old school snare production on this album makes it definitely a hit among old school rap fans. Tracks to check out for sure are "Premonition", "Ford's Prayer", and "Still Slummin". Isaiah Rashad - "The Race freestyle"
-One of my favorite young rappers out right now. Nice little freestyle on the race instrumental. Chance premiered a new song on Colbert
-You probably saw this already, but just in case you didn't, here it is. Has an emotional vibe to it but I'm liking it.
-New verse from Nas on this song from Joe Fox
-I can't not post a new Nas verse. OLDER STUFF I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS WEEK:
-Motherfucking GREEN DAY. I saw them at the Global Citizen Festival last weekend in Central Park and I feel like they get shit on now because of all the political shit they do, but I'd like to take a minute to re-focus on the absolute bangers they put out in the 90s. Could go on forever but a couple are below for any young bucks who never gave them a fair shake. "Burnout" "Longview" "Welcome To Paradise" "She" "Warning" "Minority" "When I Come Around" OTHER RANDOM STUFF
-I imagine a few of you guys out there aren't familiar with Riff Raff. If you're not, he's basically a parody rapper who's incredibly self-aware and just makes ridiculous music that is so bad that it's good. You talk about "branding", this guy curated his brand with perfection. Not to mention other rappers love him. He's super fucking funny, but he actually has a couple verses that will surprise you, gonna link those below. "Bird On A Wire" feat. Action Bronson Orion's Belt" feat. Kitty Pryde "Lava Glaciers" feat. Childish Gambino "Aquaberry Dolphin" feat. Mac Miller
Alright that's all for me, as always leave whatever music/shows you got in the comments!
