Team L5 Lite 3D: Quick Look
Not bothering with pictures (yet - see notes) as you all know what this generally looks like, externally and internally, but here
is AnandTech's internal picture. This drive gets a ton of questions so I picked one up just to do a little diving into it but I recommend AnandTech's review
for in-depth performance information. VLO Report
- Controller: SMI SM2258 - as expected
- Firmware revision: 02K0S8FA - different than AnandTech's, but I've seen this before on Apacer's AS3501
- 512MB of DRAM: 4Gb Micron DDR3L in the 256Mx16b configuration
- Sixteen 256Gb dies or four dies per channel.
- Flash: 64L Samsung TLC. Yes, that probably comes as a surprise, as when I first saw this drive it had Intel 32L, but we know it has variable flash. See note 1.
- 16k refers to the page size, e.g. 16KiB. This is a typical value for modern TLC drives.
No need for a full write test, just enough to get the job done. HD Tune
- Here is AnandTech's for comparison - keep in mind that's at QD32
- We're in agreement that there's a small amount of static SLC2
- Base TLC speed is pretty good, better than my NS200, but that was expected - NS200 has the SM2258 but a large SLC cache.
- Compare to a 500GB MX500
- Sequential and 4K depth/thread performance matches or exceeds the MX500
- 4K LQD isn't quite as good - this is where it's more in the Budget SATA/OS tier, specifically with reads
- Compare to a 500GB MX500
- Similar all-around performance
- Weaker 4K LQD performance as on CDM
with 50GB (46.5GiB) file
- You see this matches the HD Tune result: higher speed within small SLC, followed by ~260 MB/s to TLC
- This is a sequential transfer at low queue depth
Updates go here.
- SM2258 w/DRAM and 64L 3D TLC
- Similar to the Crucial MX500 and NS200 but with a smaller static SLC cache and weaker 4K LQD reads3
- Flash is likely overstock/rejected Samsung, but hardly bad (see below)
- FW revision on mine is unusual (most common is Q0XXXA) so hardware may be variable (see note under flash below and #5)
- It's sometimes possible to get a MPTool here or here for a given hardware configuration. This allows a lot of flexibility but may be daunting.
- Secure Erase if possible, using Parted Magic or something similar.
Flash (ongoing investigation)
- This drive has no temperature sensors. I feel this might be at least part of the problem with this drive: very dense NAND package (16DQ) with a shortened PCB in a poor environment could cause issues.4
- This drive has other good sensors/data, however. Specifically it tracks blocks, erases, writes/programs to both host and NAND, etc.
- After testing and some use the NAND writes are at 115GB and host writes 208GB
- Be aware values are given in hex, e.g. 64 life remaining is 100%.
- Initial invalid/bad blocks: 12 (NS200: 16)
- Spare/valid blocks: 122 (NS200: 70)
- P/E: 1000 (NS200: 1500)
Conclusion so far: this is indeed slower flash (as seen with 4k) but not of poor quality per se. It's still Samsung-sourced but binned by Team. It seems to be a cheap alternative used in other markets. The sheer amount of products using it leads me to believe that it is not especially deficient. The conservative SLC cache design should be, if anything, more reliable.
- I've found confirmation from foreign sites that the 480GB L5 Lite 3D does come with this Samsung memory.
- I've found some drives like the ADATA SU650 and SU800 can come with a variation of this flash in other regions.
- Variation also found in lesser flash products, e.g. memory cards/USB.
- Variation also found in the HP S700 (SM2258XT) for example, again in other markets.
- Also found in the Transcend SSD230S in other markets.
- Found AnandTech's FW paired with this flash on foreign forums.5
- The 1024Gb/CE flash type seems to relate to the (relatively low) sequential TLC write speed, although not an issue at higher queue depths.6
On the whole this is a solid drive in my opinion. I will be doing a lot more testing, of course. If you purchased one of these and have a different firmware revision (e.g. if yours is Q0XXXA like AnandTech's), please run the VLO tool and report back with the flash type.
1 After all this I might have to open it up - if you look at the Apacer you'll notice on the board it says "BGA316" which tells us something: this is Hynix or Samsung memory (I mentioned this many months ago after seeing an image of the L5 Lite 3D). So for those thinking the VLO report may be mistaken - unlikely.
2 This is not a bad thing. It will perform close to the MX500 in most situations and while having a small cache isn't ideal, this is a speed-limited SATA drive and no dynamic caching may be better for endurance if anything.
3 This could relegate it to the Budget category but probably not on its own - the variable hardware/flash is what makes this a riskier buy and therefore gets put into a lower category to reflect that lack of quality. I think this flash specifically is not top tier but it's definitely good enough to be in the Budget category.
4 Yes, flash likes heat, but adjacent components do not. The controller will likely throttle well before it has issues as well but nevertheless this is a potential area for trouble since many people may not know how hot the drive is running. Performance drops and such could lead users to believe the drive is malfunctioning, even hard rebooting the system, which has some chance of corrupting data/mapping.
5 Confirmed this memory can come with the Q0XXXA firmware revisions. It seems newer L5 Lite 3Ds should have this flash. This is another possible source of poor reviews: in the past inferior memory may have been utilized. This NAND could change in the future again, however.
6 This isn't a huge deal but someone looking at the Crucial MX500, for example, may want to know this. Likewise the NS200 with its large SLC cache has a different response. This drive has consistent writes, just slower than the "Top SATA" drives on my list. It belongs in the Budget category.
