Help with a basic recording setup
Hi all, first-time poster here. Looking for some advice.
Pre-COVID, I had started jamming with a couple of my previous bands for fun, and we had brought back some old originals that before we had only recorded on good old cassette Portastudios. Once it is safe to get back together again, we would like to make some nice digital recordings.
I have a
Lexicon Omega interface I bought years ago with Cubase LE software that allows me to record 4 tracks at once. Nothing fancy, but enough for what we want to do. I want to record 4 tracks of drums using the
Glyn Johns method (I need a couple decent condenser mics yet) with the Omega. We can add in vocals, guitars, and bass tracks later, obviously.
Here is what I am trying to figure out:
- The Omega only has 2 XLR inuts. Can I use an XLR to TS/TRS 1/4 inch adapter on 2 of the drum mics? Will that hurt the quality of the recording at all? And would I want to not do that with the condenser mics?
- We would put the drums in the downstairs to isolate the as much as possible. The Omega only has a single headphone out, but it does have 2 line outs on the back. For us to play along with our drummer, could we run the line outs into our regular mixer for the band upstairs to hear, and then run the guitar, bass, and vocals into the mixer and send a headphone feed to our drummer so he can hear us better? Sort of like using a sub-mixer for the drums, but then only him getting a monitor send since we will all hear the main mix?
Thank you all in advance! I've recorded a bunch of stuff on the old Portastudio, and some basic solo stuff with the Omega which turned out pretty nice, but trying to do a full drum kit is a new adventure for me!
