The main World of Warcraft pirate server is temporarily shut down after revelations of several corruption malpractices. The related subreddits were not prepared for this legendary amount of popcorn.

TL;DR: The corruption of the admins of The Elysium Project, the biggest Vanilla WoW pirate server, is revealed. Server shuts down. People rage. Just check /wowservers and /ElysiumProject and have fun.
English is not my main language so please forgive the bad grammar.
The World of Warcraft (WoW) playerbase has a niche group of nostalgic fans that would rather play to the original game as it was on 2005-2006 (known as Vanilla WoW) than the current "noob-friendly" 5th expansion that Blizzard offers. Since the company has no option to do this legally, these player use pirate servers.
Now, the WoW pirate server scene is frequently a shitshow, since most of them are usually run by people that want to make the most money out of it. But one Vanilla server in particular was always seen as the most "pure": Nostalrius, which peaked at 10K players and had decent coding.
Now, Nostalrius was shut down by Blizzard last year. A decision that sparked a truly massive amount of drama and anger, with popular youtubers complaining left and right about the company's greed and so on. Blizzard applied some damage control by inviting the server admins to their headquearters, and they hinted the posibility of having Vanilla servers on their own, but that was about it.
But then, from the ashes of Nostalrius a new server was born: The Elysium Project. Now, I have to admit I'm confused about the timeline here, but at some point the admins were replaced by a group of people that had some shady background in the WoW servers scene. Some people rang the alarms back then, but people were mostly happy to have a place to play Vanilla again with high population.
Since Elysium started, it received as much praise as corruption accusations. The project has around 14K people playing on 3 different servers and the coding was smooth as butter, but butter itself was part of the two or three weekly post were users (the youtuber Alexensual comes to mind as one of the most prominent critics) pointed to an alleged network of gold and PvP rank selling (Getting Rank 14 in Player vs Player, the max rank, was one of the hardest feats back in 2005) by the admins. For the most part, though, the accusations passed unheeded.
But, loe and behold, it seems like it was all true. The Elysium Project was shut down yesterday after a message by some admins could be read all over Azeroth. Basically it pointed to the corruption of the main admins, and announced a new server and the death of Elysium.
Since then, the /wowservers and /ElysiumProject subreddits have descended in a massive spiral of drama never seen before. I'll try point to some threads, but you can basically choose anything on their frontpages to appreciate the drama. You have rage, you have memes, you have screentshots, you have videos of discord voice chats... it's truly a golden age for drama addicts.

For those interested in a much more in-depth summary of everything that happened, this thread by PeprSpry explains everything much better than my poor english can.
  1. People react to the admins admitting corruption in a leaked discord talk.
  2. Do people need to apologise to Alexensual or is he just an asshole nevertheless?
  3. A transcript with the admision of goldselling gets a lot of attention

Example of a question:

EDIT 1: I wanted to add these three questions up here because I think they need to be addressed in our community.

Why is your name “Squatingdog”

  • I was trying to think of a better AIM name than "curlycoolhair" to chat with this girl I liked in junior high. I was incredibly immature and impressionable and this joke made me laugh that day:
  • "The youngest son of a great chief went to his father and asked "Oh father, how did you choose the names for your three children?" The great chief replied "My son, when your older brother was born, the first sight I saw after the moment of his birth was a bear running through the woods; so I named him running-bear. The morning your sister was born, the first sight I saw was a beautiful star, so I named her morning-star. But why do you ask me such a question, squattingdog?"
  • To my alarm the name was already in use, so I improvised... Squatingdog. A year later instead of lucking out with the lady I became one of the best halo players at my school. This solidified my immature name directly into my ego when I traveled with my xbox and TV to friends house to friends house winning LAN tournaments.
  • I guess that is all it takes to have your alias lock in. I am 32 now and still love the name because of it's nostalgia of my gaming history, it's misspelled reminding me to stay humble, and its literally means a dog taking a shit which helps me not take myself too seriously.
How do you feel how toxic your community is to others who may try to make a guide too? - u/OnlyThotsRibbit
  • Yeah this is a great question and one that definitely needs to be addressed. Having a following is actually a lot of hard work to keep up with hundreds of thousands of people. Although I really push for bettering others, lifting people up, and being a positive influence on each other sometimes that doesn’t always get passed along to those who consider themselves as “followers. I have been investing in the subreddit for a long time now and have built strong bonds and loyalty with people in this subreddit. My content has been scrutinized, poked at, and belittled when I started… and it really feels horrible as a content creator to have to delete a post because of feeling worthless. I want to apologize on behalf of anyone who was put into a situation similar to that because of anyone representing my “community.” That sucks and is not cool. I want to be clear on what my community looks like. My community is constructive with their criticism, my community doesn’t blindly hate others, my community owns what is theirs both the good and the bad parts, and my community creates a culture of acceptance and belonging. Anyone outside of these boundaries don’t know me and what I stand for. I also want to be really frank. There are a lot of sharks in these waters who take content from here and spend 5 minutes in photoshop slapping your own support a creator over our work. There are also people who spend 12 hours in photoshop creating exact replicas of stuff and claiming it to be original. That also sucks and is not cool. Do good & original work and it will most likely be respected.
What inspired you to create such a positive and inclusive community of Fortnite players? - u/brently49
  • I've been an online gamer ever since I could play warcraft with my parents. It's an incredible time to be a gamer. Over the years we've overcome some harsh stigmas, what was only a hobby before could become a job now, and playing over the couch together has evolved to playing online. We have played with players all over the world with different backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, ages and what I have found to be a common reality amongst gamers that is our desire to belong. Belonging a friend group, a clan, or being recognized as the best of something. However, along the way I think we forget that those we are playing against are real people and our attitude towards them can be incredibly toxic and unwelcoming causing hurt and discomfort. In these moments we tend to get fired up at someone we barely know. So at the core of my streams I set out to try and provide a safe environment of belonging and opportunity to play games alongside each other. With the hope to provide opportunity to be more known and hopefully change some of the toxic behaviors gamers might be used to.

EDIT 2: Ending the questions now. I just answered 4 hours of questions! Thank you for everyone who was a part of this! I will look at the responses tonight and circle back around later! I never ran out of questions even after 4 hours! You are all incredible and are one of the most amazing communities out there. Sorry stream for cancelling the tail end but just had too many questions being asked of me! I will see you all tomorrow! Be good to each other and let's get another reddit celebration game going!

Much love,
Jeremy (squatingdog)
Cheers!
